New Diocesan Bishop of Chunchon

On November 21, 2020, the Holy Father accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Diocese of Chunchon, presented by the Most Rev. Lucas Kim Woon-hoe, and appointed the Reverend Simon Kim Ju-young as bishop of the same diocese.

Bishop-elect Simon Kim, was born in 1970, ordained a diocesan priest of Chunchon on December 15, 1997. After ordination he first served as parochial vicar of several parishes (1998-2001). He then studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University (2001-2006), Rome. He was subsequently in charge of the Diocesan Office for Education (2006-2007); pastor of Soyangro Parish (2008-2010); head of the Diocesan Office for Vocations (2010-2014); parish priest in Smusoop (2014-2017). Until now, he has served as director of the Church History Research Center and pastoral director for Chunchon. He also served as secretary of the CBCK Special Episcopal Commission for the Reconciliation of the Korean People.

The Mass of ordination and installation of the Most Rev. Simon Kim Ju-young, Bishop of Chunchon and Apostolic Administrator of Hamhung, took place at Jungnim-dong Cathedral in Chunchon on January 6, 2021. Due to limitations imposed by the current COVID-19 pandemic, this ceremony was held quietly with only the permitted number of participants in attendance.

 

New Auxiliary Bishop of Daejeon

 

On November 28, 2020, the Holy Father appointed the Reverend Stephanus Han Jung Hyun of Daejeon, as the new Auxiliary Bishop of Daejeon and Titular Bishop of Mozotcori.

Bishop-elect Stephanus Han, born in 1971, was ordained a diocesan priest of Daejeon on February 21, 2000.

Since his ordination, he has held the following positions: parochial vicar of Tanbangdong Parish (2000-2001) and parochial vicar of Dangjin Parish (2001-2002). He next studied in Rome at the Pontifical Biblical Institute (2002-2010) where he obtained a licentiate in Ancient East Studies. After graduation, he served as Assistant Spiritual Father at St. Joseph’s College in Rome (2010-2013). He was subsequently pastor of Budne Parish (2013-2016); member of the Presbyterial Council and secretary general of the Diocesan Synod (2015-2019); since 2014, he has been a member of the Commission for the Permanent Formation of the Clergy, a member of the group of Book Censors, and, since 2019, pastor of the Holy Family Parish.

The episcopal ordination of the Most Rev. Stephanus Han Jung Hyun, Auxiliary Bishop of Daejeon, took place at the Solmoe Shrine on January 25, 2021, with the Most Rev. Lazzaro You Heung-sik, Bishop of Daejeon, presiding. Due to limitations imposed by the current COVID-19 pandemic, this ceremony was held quietly with only the permitted number of participants in attendance.

Including these new bishops, the Catholic Church in Korea now consists of 43 bishops, including 16 bishops emeriti.
